United States President Theodore Roosevelt, <I>center,</I> visited the construction site of the Panama Canal in 1906. The United States completed the 50.72-mile (81.63-kilometer) canal through the Isthmus of Panama in 1914. The canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and is considered one of the world's greatest engineering feats.
